|
Most of the Madhya Bharat is a part of
Peninsular with hills and plains elsewhere. |
|
|
|
Madhya
Bharat can be divided into the following three
major Physiographic regions: |
|
The Central Plateau |
|
Situated in between the
Narmada-Son Valley and the Vindhya, this part is known as the Central
Plateau. The river Yamuna in the north and the steep scrape in the
south from its boundary. The height of this region is about 800 metres
(above the mean sea level) in the west, which gradually decreases to
about 600 meters in the east. This region can be divided into the
following 5 sub-regions. |

The Vindhyan Escarpment |
|
This region is mainly extended over Damoh,
Panna, Satna, and Rewa districts. The height of this region is
in between 300 and 450 m. the Son and the Ken are main rivers in
this region.

a. |
The Malwa
Plateau
This plateau extends over Guna, Rajgarh,
Mandsaur, Jahabua, Dhar Ratlam, Dewas, Ujjain, Indore, Sehore,
Vidisha, Shajapur, Raisen and Sagar district in the west of
the Vindhyan escarpment. Formed mainly by the districts in
the west of the Vindhyan escarpment. Formed mainly by the
besalt of the Deccan Trap, the black soil extends over this
region. Generally this part is 350-450m high with few peaks
over 800 m high, few of them are Sigar (881 m), Janapav
(854), Ghajari (810) etc. the Chambal, the Chhipra, the
Betwa, the Sonar are the rivers in this region.

The Bundelkhand Plateau
This region extended over the
Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Datia, Gwalior, Shivpuri, districts.
The height of this region is in between 150 and 450 m. The
height peak of this region is the Siddhababa peak (1172 m).
The Betwa and the Dhasan are main rivers in this region.

c. |
The Madhya
Bharat Plateau
This region is
extended over the Morena, Bhind, Gwalior, Shivpuri, Guna and
Mandsaur districts in the north and the northwest of Madhya
Pradesh. The height of this region is above 500 m but, the
height of the plain situated in between north and
north-eastern parts is between 150 and 300 m. the Chambal
and the Sindh are main rivers in this region.

The
Narmada – Son Valley
A narrow
and long valley of the river Narmada is situated in the
Mandla, Jabalpur, Hoshangabad, Raisen, Narsingapur, East
Nimar, West Nimar, Dhar and Dewas Districts. Parts of the
Jabalpur, Shahdol and Sidhi districts are in the Son Valley.
The Height of this valley is 300 m. In some places the
height is above 600 m. The Narmada, the Son and their
tributaries drain this region.

The Satpura Range
|
|
In between the Narmada and the Tapti rivers the region extends
east to west and parallel to the Vindhyan range. The region is
divided into the following two sub-divisions: |

a. |
The
Satpura Range
The region extends over the Balaghat,
Seoni, Chhindwada, East Nimar and West Nimar districts of
southern Madhya Pradesh. The height of this region is in 400
and 600 m. Dhupagarh (1350 m) – the highest peak of the
Madhya Pradesh, is situated in this region.

b. |
The Maiklal Plateau
The widened part of eastern Satpura Range is known as the
Maiklal Plateau. The height of this region is above 900 m.

The Eastern
Plateau |
|
The region extends over the eastern districts
of Madhya Pradesh. This part is divided into the following three
sub-regions:

a. |
The
Dandakaranya
The Bastar
district is included in this region. Average height of this
region is 150 m but at some places the height is up to 800
m. the whole region is a part of the Godavari basin.

b. |
The Chhattisgarh Plain
This region is also known as the Mahanadi Basin. The region
extends over the Raipur, Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur and
Raigarh districts. The whole region is as a drainage basin
of the river Mahanadi. Its average height is below 300 m.

c. |
The Baghelkhand Plateau
This region extends over the north-Raigarh, Sarguja and
Sidhi districts of the northeast of Madhya Pradesh. Pen
plains – the flat surfaced table and (Mesa), are found in
this region. The height of this region is in between 400 and
1000 m. |
